ISO 9001: quality management system
ISO 9001 sets requirements for a quality management system (QMS). It does not tell you how to manufacture a product. It structures how an organization understands its customers, controls its processes and improves. The 6th edition, ISO 9001:2026, was published on 16 September 2026 and replaces ISO 9001:2015.
What is ISO 9001?
The standard asks an organization to understand its context, engage top management, plan risks and opportunities, support its processes (competence, documented information), carry out operations, evaluate performance, then improve what is not working.
ISO 9001 does not prescribe technical work. It asks you to show that you consistently deliver products and services that meet customer expectations, and that you learn from gaps.
Who it is for
Usually a customer asks for it to check delivery stability: will I always get the same quality, and will it even improve over time?
In Quebec it shows up in tenders, among manufacturers, integrators and service firms. It is not limited to factories. A service SMB can use it to clarify processes, ownership and evidence.
Structure of the standard
ISO 9001 follows the harmonized structure shared by ISO management system standards, the same clause logic as ISO 27001 or ISO 14001. That makes an integrated system easier.
Clause 4: context and interested parties. Clause 5: leadership and quality policy. Clause 6: planning, risks and opportunities. Clause 7: support, competence and documented information. Clause 8: operations. Clause 9: performance evaluation. Clause 10: improvement.
The 2026 edition: a targeted update
ISO 9001:2026 does not rebuild the QMS. ISO presents targeted changes: a stronger leadership role (quality culture and ethical behaviour), a quality policy more clearly tied to context and strategic direction, a clearer split between risks and opportunities, people awareness, and a much fuller Annex A to explain the intent of requirements.
Climate change is not a 2026 invention: the 2024 amendment is now integrated into the body of the standard. Organizations certified to ISO 9001:2015 have three years to move to the 2026 edition. Timing and audit method are agreed with the certification body, often during surveillance or recertification.
Certification
The certificate is issued by an accredited certification body after audit. Certi360 does not issue the certificate: we prepare the system so the audit looks at processes that actually operate, not a manual gathering dust.
If you are still certifying to 2015, do not delay the project waiting for 2026. The transition gives you three years. If you are already certified, start with a gap analysis rather than a full rewrite.
